Julie woke up this
morning before anyone else in the house just a she always does. She
applied some light makeup to accentuate her soft blue eyes and combed straight
her long sleep bunched chestnut hair. Soon after, she headed down
stairs. As she cranked the coffee machine on and began making
the kids their lunches she smiled looking forward to another monotonous
day. She settled on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch
making sure to cut the crust off her youngest daughter’s sandwich, because in
her daughter’s words, “I simply cannot not have any crust on my
sandwich.” It was the new cool thing to do at school or so Julie had
been told by her child.
Soon the kids were
buzzing about the kitchen making a mess and Julie only shook her head knowing
she would have to clean it all up. Her husband followed
shortly after in his normal panicked “I am late for work” fashion and as he
sped by her she handed him a thermos of piping hot coffee. “Have a
good day dear”, she said as he kissed her on the way out.
She watched him
through the kitchen window get into his car and speed away. At that
very moment the school bus came rumbling down the street and stopped in front
of her house squealing like old school busses did and Julie called out to her
children to hurry or they would miss the bus. A few seconds later
she walked out with her children, handing them their lunches, and uttered an
expected good morning hello to the bus driver.
