9 to 5

He walked into the apartment exhausted from another monotonous day.  As he slings his brief case uncaring onto the couch halfway across the room he wonders why he even bothers.  What does his tireless effort get him?  Kicking off his shoes as he sluggishly makes his way to the kitchen he can only think of one thing; a nice cold beer.  Opening the fridge he peers into it longingly, looking past the molded cheese and half eaten apple pie for anything to take his mind off work.  Sadly there is not an alcoholic beverage to be found. The closest thing to salvation for him is the O’Doul’s that has been there for nearly two years now.  He bought it once for a pregnant friend, who never even tried it, and now he was actually considering drinking it himself. Realizing he will never be that desperate and with a soft sigh, he shut the refrigerator door and leaned back against it closing his eyes, tuning the world out.  That’s when it hits him.

A sweet fragrance teases his nose breaking through the chains of a tiresome day.  He stands tall trying to figure out what it is and where it came from.  Unsure, he follows his hunch excitedly down the hall.  His bedroom door is shut. His bedroom door is never shut. He knowingly opens it with a smile on his face well before he sees her.  The reason he wanted this day to end vanishes like dust, replaced by the desire to have it last forever.  Now he knows why he does this.  Why he works so hard.  She playfully eyes him as she quietly coos from the comforts of his bed “I have been waiting for you lover”.   Quickly and confidently he shuts the door behind himself, closing out the rest of the world, ready to enjoy her and the rest of his day.
